← RANGE LOBBY
SPEED
An operation asks you to think: read the box, form a
hypothesis, act. A drill asks you to type — you already
know what to do, and the only question is whether your hands do it in
eleven seconds or forty. That second skill is the one an incident taxes,
and this is where it gets rehearsed.
A drill is a pair. Here is the input, here is the output, close the gap:
IN users.csv OUT ana@x.io
ana,eng,ana@x.io bo@x.io
bo,ops,bo@x.io
$ cut -d, -f3 users.csv
There is no sentence in that box, and that is the design. Inferring the
transformation is the skill being drilled.
How it grades
Not on phrasing. The range runs your pipeline against the input and
compares stdout to the answer, so cut -d, -f3 users.csv and
awk -F, '{print $3}' users.csv both pass. Every drill states
whether line order counts, because that is the one rule that decides fair
versus infuriating and it is never left implicit.
A tool this range does not simulate is answered with cannot check that
here — never you were wrong. That outcome scores nothing,
costs nothing, and moves nothing.
The range writes the first one with you
A drill just above your reach is one you cannot do, and staring at it
teaches nothing. So a skill you have never met arrives with the whole line
ghosted in on the prompt and you type it — typing it is
the rep. The ghost then fades: first it gives you the tool
and takes the flags away, then it goes entirely once you can recall the
line cold, and it comes back the day you miss one.
It is not a setting. How much of the line you get is the range's estimate
of what you can already do, so a rep the ghost carried is not scored as one
you recalled. EXPERT turns it off; nothing turns it up.
The free words
Type any of these instead of a pipeline. None of them costs score:
tools lists every command this range runs, with the flags each
one implements,
input and expected restate the pair,
hint gives a nudge where one is authored, and
skip moves on.
What is measured, and what is not
- A set is a fixed number of drills and then it ends. A
schedule with no stopping point is a treadmill regardless of what it
pays.
- The clock runs from the moment the pair paints to the moment you press
Enter. Nothing about the network is in that number.
- Your comparison is your own past times. There is no
leaderboard here and there is no ranking against anybody else.
- Progress lives in this browser. There is no account, and nothing you
type leaves the page except the command being graded.
